Departing from the pier, this comprehensive tour begins with a drive through the city’s financial heart, crossing the Galata Bridge and traveling along the banks of the Golden Horn, arrive at the Chora Museum, and the most important Byzantine monument in Istanbul after the Hagia Sophia. Housed within the museum is a veritable collection of 14th century frescoes, gold-inlay mosaics and some of the world’s finest Byzantine paintings. Continue around the mighty city walls to Istanbul’s Old City. Arrival at the Byzantine Hippodrome, the ancient chariot grounds of the Byzantine Empire. The tour continues to the Underground Cistern, consisting of a network of waterways dating from the 3rd century B.C. Proceed to the Golden Horn for lunch at Fener Kiosk. After lunch, you may choose to visit The Patriarchate, located less than 100 feet away or enjoy a leisurely walk along the Golden Horn. Continue to the Rustem Pasha Mosque which is located near the Spice Market. Built in 1550 by Sinan, the Mosque’s exterior features a mihrab completely covered with faience tiles and a particularly striking mimbar. Return to the pier in the early evening.

SHOPPING

Your guide escorts you to a store just outside the Grand Bazaar, your rendezvous point after experiencing the marketplace. Take in a carpet-weaving demonstration or explore the Bazaar where the shops are organized by the wares they sell. The narrow alleys are filled with shops offering jewelry, carpets, leather ware, copper goods and more. Bargaining is expected and half the fun.

SPECIAL NOTES

Attire for visiting the mosque should cover shoulders and knees; shoes must be removed before entering; bring or wear socks. Professional photography and flash are not allowed.

Please be aware of the ongoing restoration of the Topkapi Palace; some exhibits may be closed or artifacts might be on temporary loan to other museums.

On Sundays, the Grand and Spice Bazaar are closed. Shopping will be limited and take place in the area nearby the Grand Bazaar. The sequence of tour stops may vary.
